When to Call an Emergency Electrician: 5 Situations That Can't Wait

Electrician in Oregon Team

Some electrical problems can wait until morning. Others cannot. Knowing the difference between a routine issue and a genuine emergency can prevent fires, injuries, and property damage. Here are five situations where you should call for emergency electrical repair immediately -- day or night.

1. Sparking Outlets or Switches

A brief, tiny spark when you plug something in can be normal as the metal prongs make contact. But large, bright sparks, repeated sparking, or sparks accompanied by a popping sound indicate a serious problem. Sparking can be caused by loose wiring, a short circuit, or damaged outlet internals. If an outlet sparks, stop using it immediately, unplug everything from it, and call (877) 883-2383. Continued use of a sparking outlet risks starting a fire inside your wall.

2. Burning Smell from Outlets or Panel

A burning or acrid smell near any electrical component is one of the most dangerous warning signs. It typically means wiring insulation is melting, a connection is arcing, or a component is overheating. If you smell burning near an outlet, switch, or your electrical panel, turn off power to the affected circuit at the breaker immediately. If you cannot identify which circuit is affected, shut off the main breaker and call for emergency service. Do not turn the power back on until a licensed electrician has inspected the system.

3. Partial or Complete Power Outage in Your Home Only

If your neighbors still have power but you do not, the problem is likely in your home's electrical system or the connection between your house and the utility line. A power outage isolated to your home can be caused by a failed main breaker, a damaged service entrance cable, or a utility meter issue. Partial outages where only half your circuits work usually indicate a lost phase, which is a serious problem that needs immediate repair. Check your main breaker first -- if it has not tripped but you still lack power, call an electrician.

4. Buzzing, Humming, or Crackling from Your Electrical Panel

Your electrical panel should be essentially silent. Buzzing, humming, or crackling sounds from the panel indicate loose connections, a failing breaker, or arcing inside the panel. Arcing generates extreme heat and can melt bus bars, damage the panel enclosure, and start fires. Do not open the panel yourself. Call (877) 883-2383 for an emergency assessment. A licensed electrician has the equipment and training to safely diagnose and repair panel issues.

5. Electrical Shock from an Outlet, Switch, or Appliance

If you receive a shock when touching an outlet, switch, appliance, or any metal surface in your home, this is an emergency. Electrical shock can indicate missing or damaged grounding, a hot wire contacting a metal housing, or a wiring fault. Stop using the affected outlet or appliance immediately. If the shock came from touching a metal pipe, faucet, or appliance housing, the problem may be a ground fault that has energized metal surfaces throughout your home. Call an emergency electrician and avoid touching metal fixtures until the issue is resolved.

What to Do While You Wait

While waiting for the electrician to arrive:

  • Turn off the affected circuit or the main breaker if you cannot isolate the problem
  • Keep everyone away from the affected area
  • Do not attempt to repair electrical problems yourself, especially in an emergency
  • If there is an active fire or someone has been seriously shocked, call 911 first
  • Use a fire extinguisher rated for electrical fires (Class C) if needed -- never use water on an electrical fire
